Card Show Security: How to Protect Your Inventory and Cash at the Booth

Card shows are some of the friendliest events around, but they also put a lot of small, valuable, easy-to-pocket items on open tables in crowded rooms. Theft, payment scams, and distraction tricks do happen. The goal isn't to turn your booth into a fortress; it's to make it a harder target than the table next door while keeping it welcoming.

1. Layout is your first line of defense

  • Keep high-value cards in locked or closed cases facing the customer, with the opening on your side.
  • Put cheap, browsable items at the front edge (bulk bins, binders) and expensive items toward the middle where you can watch them.
  • Keep a clear sightline. Don't let tall displays block your view of your own table.

2. Hide what's under the table

Backup inventory, bags, and cash boxes under your table are tempting if they're visible. A full-length, fitted custom tablecloth that reaches the floor on the front and sides hides everything underneath. That's both a security upgrade and a cleaner look. For corner or L-shaped booths, cover both tables; the Banner + Double Tablecloth Bundle keeps both sides covered and matched.

3. One card out at a time

When a buyer wants to look at a high-value card, hand out one at a time and get it back before showing another. Distraction tactics often involve multiple people asking for several cards at once. Stay calm and keep control of the pace.

4. Protect your cash and payments

  • Keep cash on your body in a waist pouch, not in a box on the table.
  • Move large bills out of your pouch periodically.
  • Confirm card and digital payments show as completed in your app, not just on a buyer's screen.
  • Be extra careful with counterfeit large bills; a counterfeit-detection pen is cheap insurance.

5. Never staff your table alone during rushes

A helper lets one person handle sales while another watches the table. If you vend alone, make friends with your neighbors and watch each other's tables during breaks. Clear identification helps too: matching branded shirts or hoodies make it obvious who works your booth, so customers don't hand cards or cash to the wrong person.

6. Secure setup and teardown

Setup and teardown are the riskiest times. Doors are open, people are distracted, and bins are everywhere. Keep cases locked until the last moment, never leave items unattended at your vehicle, and pack your highest-value inventory first.

7. Inventory before and after

Photograph or list your high-value cards before the show. If something goes missing, you'll know immediately and have proof for the promoter or police.
